(skip) The Doctor, a time traveler of an alien species (and the last of that species) called the Time Lords, travels through time and space, encountering monsters and having many adventures. However, one day he runs into a dangerous group of aliens, called the Family of Blood, who hunt him down by smell (they don't know what he looks like, they can only smell him). However, because the Doctor is the last of his species, he is unique in all of time and space, so to escape the Family, who have a limited lifespan, the Doctor changes, becoming human. In that state, his timelord-consciousness is hidden away in a fob watch, unaccessible even to him. As a human without memories of his alien life, the Doctor calls himself John Smith and works as a school teacher in 1913. There, he falls in love with the school's matron, Nurse Joan Redfern.
